[ernie:root] ftp putla3
Connected to putla3.theocc.com.
220 putla3 FTP server (Version wu-2.6.2+Sun) ready.
Name (putla3:root): root
331 Password required for root.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.
ftp>

BUT from putla3 to ernie ftp works. on both machines
/etc/ftpusers has no entry for root.

What OS are you using?

Configure FTP for root logins

First remove the 'root' line from /etc/ftpusers.
YOU SAID IT DID NOT HAVE ROOT SO THIS IS FINE.

Also, don't forget to edit the file /etc/ftpaccess and comment out the 'deny-uid' and 'deny-gid' lines. If the file doesn't exist, there is no need to create it.

remember that giving root ftp access is not encouraged, just remember to edit files after you are done>

Thanks

The OS is solaris 9....ftp still doesnot work

Just want to make sure since this is solaris 9 you actually checked /etc/ftpd/ftpusers and /etc/ftpd/ftpaccess correct?

I have a solaris 9 box running, just installed last month, the only thing I needed to edit was /etc/ftpd/ftpusers.

You are able to ftp to this box as a user correct?

I think you'll see this is Solaris 2.6 from ftp login: -
220 putla3 FTP server (Version wu-2.6.2+Sun) ready.
This doesn't look like Solaris9. NB You may have Solaris9 at your end, but at the remote site it's 2.6!

2.6 & Solaris 8 display O/S on FTP but Solaris 9 doesn't seem to.
In that case it uses /etc/ftpusers - comment out root as cndcadams says (at remote end)
#root
daemon
bin
sys
adm
lp
uucp
nuucp
listen
nobody
noaccess
nobody4

I was wondering that Marrow? I thought it was 2.6, have not seen it in a long time so the wu-2.6.2+sun was throwing me off.

CAF786;

run a more /etc/release on the system you are trying to ftp to not from, this will give the OS version etc...

Thanks

CA

I can confirm that (Version wu-2.6.2+Sun) is displayed by Solaris 9, I have one on my desk.
I am having horrific problems with Solaris 9 FTP as well but that I will post seperately.
