Hi All,

I have FTP ed compressed files (.Z) from HP system to a local windows system ( as a means of backup ), is there any means of reading those files, ( if opened with wordbad i can see only garbage )

I cannot unzip them. It can be unzippped in Windows environment if the files are compressed using gzip, But I had used compress command.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

try zipping on Unix using gzip. Then unzipping on XP.

try cygwin or "unix tools for windows" (sorry, I don't have the page, but it is a sourceforge.net page--unxtools may be).

with that you will have uncrompress, bzip2, gzip, etc. in windows.

Cheers.

If I am not mistaken Winzip should be able uncompress .z files from your HP Unix server

dblair thanks for your response, But the problem is the compressed files were removed once the files were FTP ed so i cannot gzip them now.

I 'll try what chacalinc has suggested

thanks once agian

Winzip is able to read .Z compressed files. Make sure that the files you are trying to read are not binaries. Also make sure that when you ftp the files to the windows server you transfer them in bin mode.
