ftp connection to unix

I am wrtiing a VB6 application using ftp to connect to a Unix machine.

I have used the ITC control and can manipulate data successfully.

However I also want to simply know the number of files in a certain directory on the Unix machine. A bit like using 'filecount', but I don't have a mapped drive.

Is there a simple way of doing this.
