I have installed 2 Exchange servers, one as a back-end and one as a front-end. I have installed Enterprise but otherwise used the default configuration.
I then made sure that the 'front-end server' box was ticked on the front-end.

When I test the OWA on the back-end server, I enter my logon details and it works perfctly. When I try to access my mailbox via the front-end server I am prompted for the username and password but I get the 'access denied' message.

BTW. I have not yet placed the front=end server in our DMZ, they are basically sitting next to one another.

I have checked this problem in the archives and it appears that many people have had the same problems, didn't find a solution though.

Any help greatly appreciated.
Mike

Are you entering your user name in the DOMAIN\USER NAME format or have your configured the front end server to assume a default domain. By default you need to enter the domain\user name and the normal password.

Alternatively....

Configuring The Front-End Server To Assume a Default Domain
You can configure the front-end server to assume a default domain so that users do not
need to remember their domain.

To configure the front-end server to assume a default domain

1. Start Exchange System Manager on the front-end server: Click Start, point to
Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.

2. Right-click the “Exchange” virtual directory, and then click Properties.

3. Click the Access tab, and then click Authentication.

4. Select the Basic authentication check box, and then type the domain in the Default
domain box. (See Figure 9.)

5. Repeat this procedure for the “Public” virtual directory.
Note Ensure that the System Attendant service is running so that the configuration settings
replicate from the directory to the IIS metabase (you can also restart Exchange System
Attendant to force replication).

After replication is complete, users can log on with just their user name and password; no
domain is required.

Many thanks for the information.
I have now managed to get the front-end config talking to the back-end stores.

Thanks again.
Mike
