Hi,

I've just installed a fresh copy of XP on my parent's PC but for the life of me I cannot get the network going.

The install all appeared fine. When Windows finally booted up I plugged the network cable in but no internet.

With or without the cable plugged in, Network Places says 'Local Area Connection 1' is 'Enabled' and properties list the time up etc. I've tried disabling then re-enabling but no success.

There is network availability through the cable as I can transfer the cable to my laptop and it starts working straight away.

ipconfig initially reports the IP as the invalid ip 169.xx.xx.xx. If I /release /renew it is renewed to 0.0.0.0

I've also tried troubleshooting the DSL modem / router to no avail. ie removing router and using cable direct from modem - works on laptop, not on PC.

Looking at the network card properties, the setting are identical to that of the laptop. In device manager, the NIC is reported as working fine - no conflicts.

Before I reinstalled windows the network was working fine.

Oh, an I also switched off the pre-SP2 XP 'firewall' with no change to the symptoms.

Any ideas?

A "flatten" and reinstall is the last thing you what to have to do.

With wireless adapters under USB:

. sort any USB issues, (it seems you have)
. Make the choice: either let the Windows Wireless Zero service handle the adapter; or, use the wireless adapter manufacturer's utility. Trying to do both is a mistake.
. As a test, Start, Run, services.msc
Scroll to the near bottom to see Windows Wireless Zero Configuration, and stop the service.

Are things better having done this?

Thanks for all your help with this guys, appreciate it.

It may well be the mobo drivers that aquias suggested. CD's are all at my parent's - Doh!.

bcaster - I've tried all links you provided but no success. I know it's not DHCP problem as I assigned a 192.168.x.x ip in range of router's dhcp, subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway of router ip and doesnt work. A lot of them hint at 3rd party apps / spyware and doing windows updates / reseting networking options... But this is a fresh windows on a fresh partition - so no 3rd party installed yet. I guess it's possible that trojan /spyware got onto the pc in the first nanoseconds that i plugged it in but i doubt it as the router is firewalled.

USB is a more general issue as usb flash disk and external harddrive both causing the PC to hang on pluggin in - also probably linked to mobo chipset drivers - now I've been made aware it makes sense.

In the mean time, I'm trying SP2. Other than than I'll have to wait til the weekend when I visit the folks.

Thanks again
