You may have my earlier post asking how to wipe my disk and reinstall windows 2000 professional.
Have now done that but still have exactly same problem in that computer is frezing and locking up leaving no way to exit other than reboot and somtimes not even that but to swich mains switch off. No keyboard, mouse or even the normal computer power switch workd when this happens. Does anyomne have nay ideas on what to try next. Keeping it short as this is second attempt to post problem as its freezing very regular and i dont even have hardly anything installed yet other than basics.
Your help adn advice will be appreciated.
Regards moonshadow

Sound like you have some sort of hardware fault within your system, would try checking memory then other components in your computer.

have checked all that have even unpluuged all extra accesories apart from mouse, keyboard and printer had to install modem, printer, sound and internal modem after installing windows but probelm remained still. I am at a loss as to what to try next. Thankyou though for for your thoughts on it.

Could be a fault on the motherboard which is causing it. You might want to get it tested if its a newish motherboard

Given that you've already reinstalled Windows, you can assume it must be some sort of hardware issue. This is further corraborated by the fact that your power and reset switch don't seem to work when the PC locks up. Check your mobo manufacturer site for any possible support suggestions. It may be a good idea to update the mobo bios. If after all that you still have issues consider replacing your mobo.

You might start by checking the memory. I've had similar issues when a DIMM when bad. At what point in the boot process does the computer lock up?

Freezeing up is typical of viruses, shorts in the motherboard, bad memory, or power supplies on their way out. Voltage drops too low and the computer locks up. If your bios displays real-time voltages then you could sit and watch it for a bit. If you didn't use fdisk /mbr a virus could still be in the boot record area. You could remove the hard drive and boot with a floppy and see if it locks up in DOS. Also, are all the cooling fans working and is the machine overclocked?

This sort of thing happens all the time to us....constant lock ups. We're running older Compaq EN500/733/866's. 9 times out of 10 it is being caused by faulty hard drives. The compaq diagnostics come back and say the drive is fine, but it's not. We replace the drive, image it, and the problem disappears *POOF* Just like magic. Occasionally it is caused by the power supply putting out lower than normal voltages (bad capacitors in P/S). Other than that I would suspect the memory.
