Free website statistics?

Does anyone know how I can add simple statistics tracking and display to my website running on IIS on Windows 2000 Server? I looked at some of the 'log file analysis' software available, but it all seems to be overkill for my small site, and I am not willing to pay for something which should have come with IIS in the first place.

All I really need is something like a simple page counter, but with a bit more informataion. Something that can tell me (and display it on my web page) how many people per day or week visit my site, If repeat visits occur, etc.

Look for a program out there called metatraffic2 by metasun. Its free and provides enough detail for you to get a feel what is going on with your site. I believe you can also display that on your page somewhere. You need a database as well. MySQL or SQL Server will do.

An alternative would be to write a script that did the counting you were looking for. There are thousands of free scripts out there for tracking web traffic.

probably overkill but you may want to try this, I've never used it myself but it gets mentioned a lot

Thanks Hondy. That 'AWSTATS' program looks great. And yes, it does seem to do a lot more than I actually need right now, but that just means I room for growth. I'll try it out soon.

Wow, the 'AWSTATS' program was not very easy to install. It required a _lot_ of manual file copying and manual configuration. I even had to remove all my old web server logs and change the web server's log file format, because it apparently didn't contain enough 'required' informaiton. And, I had to manually create a scheduled task so that it keeps the report data up-to-date.

But now that it's up and running, it seems to function very well. It looks good, has a very detailed yet simple layout, and appears to tell me more about my website than I thought I needed to know (but now see the value in that informaiton). However, only time (and larger log files) will let me completely evaluate it's usefulness.
