Check your network connection. IF you have the network icon in the taskbar, is the recieve light constant? I'm researching this for XP only. I have over 1000 boxes on XP and they all do it, but the 2k and 9x do not. I can not get a straight answer from MS on why. This happens right from the install. I've disabled all but the tcp/ip and still get a crawl.

Therain,

You mentioned that your disk space was being reduced while chatting on messenger. Which messenger are you using? Yahoo, MSN,etc.
I am not sure about the others, but Yahoo has the ability to log all teh activity within the messenger window. It is possible logging is enable, thus saving chat sessions to your harddrive.
It saves everything within a session.

Good luck, and Happy Computing

i m using yahoo ..i know that yahoo saves chat sessions ...i even checked the folder in program files ...the size of the saved sessions was about 3 mb .....

but that doesnt answer the difference between the earleir free space 4.59 GB and the now free space 4.57 GB

The difference between 4.59 and 4.57 gig, is a mere 20 meg.

You could lose that in temporary internet files within a few minutes depending on where you are browsing, and what you are doing while browsing.

Good luck, and Happy Computing

you may also want to check depending on who uses this computer..but for a while i was using a keylogging program to keep tabs on my kids. and this uses quite a bit of space for logging and screen shots

Same Problem on my XP Pro - C Drive completely fills up over time all by itself. Reboot frees up all the lost space. Cannot find cause. Searching for all files (hidden also) returns no large or recently modified file(s) to account for the continuous loss of space. If I select all files/folders on C: they do not change size but free space decreases. No virus' defragged it, indexing service is turned off. msconfig - nothing else running but explorer. All lost hard disk space is re-gained upon reboot. What's up here?
