Hi,

In a post recently somebody mentioned that they were using the 'free version' of Delphi. I didn't take much notice at the time, but now I like the idea of getting hold of a free copy of Delphi.
Does anybody know if it is possible to (legally) get a free version of Delphi (excluding Kylix)? I couldn't find anything on the Borland web site

delphi personal should be free, but it is limited in features

I don't know of a completely free version of Delphi, but I mentioned something that was trying to be delphi-compatible, which can be useful to jump platforms.

free pascal, and then the same group is trying to develop a GUI driven platform called Lazarus.

As luck would have it PC Plus magazine is currently giving away Delphi 6 Personal on the cover DVD of the current issue (issue 232), so I'm off to the newagents at lunch time.
btw Lazarus looks good, I hadn't come across it before

Last months PCP had Delphi2005 evaluation with it but only on the subscription DVD.

Cant say I am bothered about .net though it may be a M$ plot?

Steve: Delphi a feersum engin indeed.

Hm, to my experience, D6 is about as bad (buggy) as D4 was, so I wouldn't be too 'happy' with a Delphi 6 personal edition :-(
You'd better stay at D5 or go for D7, as D8/D9 (aka D2005) produce .NET assemblies, that need .NET runtime installed. If that doesn't matter, go for the latest I'd say, M$ is going to force .NET technology onto us with Windows Vista anyway, and staying up to speed with modern tools can't be bad ;-)

Just my 2 cents

There does seem to be consensus on the 'Odd numbers are best' theory. I know D3 was far more stable than D4.
But its hard to belive it was deliberate.

My mistake, it is Delphi2005 that is on the PCP cover disc, not Delphi 6. This offer is available in the shops by the way, it's not just for subscribers.
I've never really been a subscriber to the 'odd numbers are best' theory, I've used every version from 2 to 7 and the only ones to give me grief have been 3 and 7!

I had the best experience with 2,5,7 and now 2005

I've only ever used Delphi 6 Pro so I cannot compare it to any of the odd version numbers! However, I must say I've had very few problems with it.
