is it possible to automatically forward email for a particular mailbox from Exchange to an external source?

You can set up an Exchange Contact in AD that points to an outsied SMTP address. Then go into the internal user account/mailbox, select the Exchange General tab, delivery options, and set it to forward to the contact.
