Hi folks, I am trying to figure out how to configure Cisco 806 router to act as forwarding DNS server.

I am getting a dynamic IP from my ISP, and DHCP server on the 806 router is further sending IP addresses of my ISPs DNS servers to the clients on the internal network (I can see that when I type "ipconfing /all" on Windows clients). Everything is working fine as long as client is configured to get an IP from DHCP. But when I am trying to configure client with static IP and use an IP address of cisco 806 router as DNS server - DNS stops working.

I found out IPs of ISPs DNS servers and manually entered them into internal clients - everything works just fine. But obviously I cannot rely on these static entries because if my external dynamic IP (and of course DNS) addresses change, I am going to need to change DNS IPs on every client all over again.

The way it worked on cheap SMC router I used to use before - I just used router's IP address as DNS IP on my client. SMC simply forwarded DNS requests it could resolve (pretty much all of them) to my ISPs DNS server and everyone was happy. Now, if am using Cisco's internal IP as DNS server address on the client - DNS stops working.

I would appreciate any input on this subject. That might sound like an easy question to some, but I've spent a couple of days reading documentation and searching the Internet already.

Cheers,

Andy

In order for the router to act as a Proxy DNS, enter the following in global config mode

ip dns server

then in your dhcp pool, include the option
dns-server <ip address of router internal interface>

As long as your router is getting the DNS server IP addresses from your ISP, name lookups will work.

good luck.

If everything is coming your way then you're in the wrong lane.
