I was editing a spreadsheet I inherited from someone and I was trying to add a formula to it, but can't get it to compute the formula. It just displays the text of the formula rather than the computed values.

I have checked the tools/options/view/formula setting and the box is unchecked, so that doesn't seem to be the cause. I've also tried changing the format of the column to general rather than text, but that doesn't help. I've also checked that the cells aren't locked.

I've asked three other people in my office about this and they were all equally baffled. If anyone has any suggestions on other things that could be causing it, then I'd be delighted to hear them.

if the format of the cell is text, then you enter the formula, then you change the format to general, it will not do anything. You must change the format to general BEFORE entering the formula OR after entering the formula, go into the formula bar and press <RETURN>

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colours but they all live in the same box.
