I am trying to re install Win xp pro on my laptop, I would like to do a clean install but when i try and re install, the programme won't allow me the option to format the disk or remove the primary partition (C:)it just goes stright into installation?

Any help please.

tonym29,

You are teating my memory....but as I recall, when XP install starts it will detect a previous ver if it exists, then ask if you want to do with a few options, if you choose the option that allows for a full install(not an upgrade or repair) it will then ask where you want it installed and provide the available HD locations, it is here where you can select to main partition and delete it and then re-create it and format it.

This is the general procedure. You have to proceed to what appears to be an install to select starting from scratch, I know it is confusing, but it is how it is.

I have tried to do this but it won't let me delete the partition "C" ?

Do you have a retail XP CD that you using or is it an OEM Recovery CD or recovery partition type of setup?

If it is OEM you might need to consult your manual or OEM support to check your available options as you may be fighting hidden partitions and the like?

So let us know details of your setup and what you hope to achieve.

The version is on a Dell reinstall disk.

if memory serves me Dell has a special folder/partition that they install from the factory. call their support line and see if they can help.
