Format standards

Hi.

I was just wondering if anyone knows (or knows where I could find) information on the specifics of media formats.
e.g. .avi or .mov and what specifications the formats have, i.e. headers, footers, etc..

I'm just intrested because i want to start a new programming project and thought media manipulation may be an intresting field, and am just trying to get some background information on formats.
