Format Backup Tape

When I purchased my last two servers I got 12 backup tapes - all of which worked fine. However, 6 of those no longer work and it's a pain in the ass to say the least. Someone mentioned to me that it is possible to format the tapes in Computer Management somewhere.

Can anyone advise me on how to do that?

Has your backup software been set to append which will fill the tapes - should it be set to overwrite.
