I have created 6 new fields for information we need to track on each contact. I have added these new fields to the contact form (general tab), but it appears I can only have 2 across. How to I "free form" place these fields as there is no much space not used that I could place at least 3 on each line. When contact form is opened, these field are not seen until you scroll down and information is not getting entered (do not want these to be required).

Is there a way to edit the size of a field and the field's text on a form?

ah the joys of changing the forms in CRM

long and short - no way we found in CRM 3 --- ymmv

What we did was hide fields that were "out of the box" that we would never use - and make additional tabs...

If you add a new section to a form and then choose properties you can change the field layout to give you 4 fields across for example

Note though that you can only change the layout up to the point where you add the first field.
