1. i do not remember the user username AND password that i used to log in through KDE. However, I do remember the root user/pwd. how can i recover the username/pwd for the user.

2. how to switch from regular unix command log in then to KDE, or vice versa

You can't bring back a dead thread!

> run a terminal (or ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to a getty)
> the command is [tt]passwd username[/tt]
> the system will prompt you for a password.

XServers (e.g. KDE, Gnome, etc) normally run on interface 7.
You normally switch using ctrl-alt-F1 through to ctrl-alt-F7.
1 - 6 are normally standard command gettys. 7 is often the GUI.

You can't normally 'recover' a password - because the password is stored in the shadow password files as a one-way encryption hash. It's theoretically hackable - but you often need supercomputing power and a great deal of time (years!)

The [tt]passwd[/tt] command allows you to reset a user's password.
