Forcing DOC to download or open in MSWord, not browser

I have Microsoft Word documents that should not be opened through the web browser but this is all they want to do right now. I would prefer them to open directly into Microsoft Word or to save to a location on the user's computer.

How?

Right click on the link then Save object as (in IE)?..
Apropos, in actual fact it's Word opens such links, but in browser frame...

I'm really seeking an option to this on the server-side without needing to advise the user how to download with a right-click.
