I am in MS Word 97 and this is the problem.

I have a document that I have mail merged to an access database. This document also has a footer showing the filename and path. After the mail merge is complete and I save the document the footer does not automatically update to the new filename and path.

Any ideas here?

Save the document before printing so that the new file path is stored. Also, go to the Tools menu, select Options then the Print tab and make sure there is a tick in Update Fields, which will make sure the field containing the file path is updated before the merged document is printed.

Unfortunately I have tried both of these suggestions and yet the footer does not update automatically.

Anything else I can try?

You can force the field to update by opening the footer and pressing F9 after you have saved the document.

I am probably not the person who will be doing this merge on a regular basis, so I am trying to make this as idiot proof as possible. I really need something that is going to be automatic here.

Thanks for the quick replies.
