Follow Up on CD ROM opening and closing by itself

Guys, I dont think we found the solution to the Creative Infra 52x CD ROM menace. Is it the hardware coz Ive tried disconnecting the IDE cable and the problem is still there. Im not on a netwrok. Im using a standard 56K PCI modem. Im using Win ME. Thanks for the help anyway.

I posted a question on Creative's forum, but they haven't come back to me yet. There are a lot of us seeing this - the only solution I've found so far is not to use Windows ME.

Not the most helpful solution, I agree.

Maybe if enough of us post the same question, Creative might fix it?

Nope - no viruses whatsoever.

The machine in question (I have 7) is not connected to the Internet.

Unless the Trojan virus in question is Windows ME?

Can't be - a virus is a very small, very efficient piece of code... :)

Do all the people that suffer from this problem live in the same street, or work in the same building? Maybe you're all opening each others cd trays?? Anybody know what the range is on a creative remote control unit?? ;)

Isn't this only a problem if you're using ultrasonic remotes, whose waves can penetrate walls?

IR is like any other form of light, in that it is easily blocked by a solid object - or, at least, an object made of fairly dense matter.

However, it has a long wavelength, and its waves can be bent (like other forms of light) - so it's a possibility that a near neighbour could have a remote, operating at the same frequency, whose beams come through their windows across the street, through my window, into my study, bounce off the walls and open the DVD drive.

I remain unconvinced - but open to scientific discussion :)

Isn't this opening the drawer when the only connection is power? If so, then has to be a problem in controller. Or maybe there is something there that senses a lowering of body temperature when the user is about to fall asleep and it opens the drawer to wake the user up.
And if it can tell that the user is on Win Minimum Edition then they have made another breakthru on connections. Ed Fair

Does it mainly happen when you put Microsoft CD's in the drive? Maybe the drives have inbuilt intelligent quality checking that automatically eject substandard or incomplete software.....

Joking aside, if everyone who suffers from this petitions creative (maybe all email them repeatedly for a fix), they might take notice and try to sort this out. It is surely a problem with the cd drives hardware or drivers, no??........

No - it happens with any CD or NO CD in the drive!

"Intelligent"??? LOL

I'd guess that the issue lies with the driver - or this issue would manifest itself in DOS or Linux (which it doesn't).

Didn't the original post include the fact that the failure would happen with no IDE cable installed? Which would eliminate the driver? I thought he disconnected everything except power and it still failed. Which was the reason for my flip reply to the breakthrough in connectors. Ed Fair

Good point, Ed. Let me re-phrase; I have yet to see this happen under DOS or Linux. Mine is intermittent under WinME - sometimes it will open and close 3 or four times on booting, sometimes it boots just fine.

I went back to Creative's site - and my posting seems to have been deleted. I've posted again - so please add to this if you've seen this issue!

Try covering the IR detector with some opaque tape, if this does not solve problem then it must be internal to CDROM.
Anyone using a TV/HIFI/Video remote in same room?!!!!
