We have recently created a win2k server to handle our file sharing instead of novell.

In Novell depending on if you were allowed you "see" folders or not or files for that matter.

I have a requirement to do the following.

3 groups, in one folder structure.

customer. -he can see and log into the share and use and SEE some directories but not all. Those that he can see should be r/w.

staff. -he can see ALL directories and r/w some and r/o others.

developers - he can see ALL directories and r/w all.

we will call this L: drive.

for example:

L Drive: under L are the following

customer_folder
work_folder
reference_folder

customer
sees
customer_folder (r/w)

staff
sees
customer_folder (r/w)
work_folder (r/w)
reference_folder (r/o)

developer
sees
customer_folder (r/w)
work_folder (r/w)
reference_folder (r/w)

Any advice on accomplishing this I have tangled up the share and permissions so badly I am restarting.

Thank you for your help.

It's not really so bad. Under the L drive create a folder to hold these other folders like L:\share. Share the share folder and in the sharing box, give the everyone group full control to everything. Only 3 options, but give them all. On the securitys tab next to sharing, select everyone, and only let them list folder contents. This way they can see the contents in the share folder. Then on the individual folders, do NOT share these, but in the security settings, give the users whatever permission you want them to have. A little confusing at first, but it worked for me. Let me know if you need anymore info.

Maybe I am missing something, but the customer can still see the folders they shouldn't. Even though access is denied it, I must prevent them from seeing the directories at all.
Does your setup prevent the users from actually seeing their is a directory there?

No, it doesn't. I've never had to do what you want, but you might try and de-select list folders contents and see what happens. Don't know if it will work, but it would be worth a try. By the way, make sure you deselect inherit permissions box in the security settings of the share folder, otherwise, everybody has all the permissions assigned to the share folder. Good luck.
