problem is i occasionally get users ringing me that they can find certain Dirs, on looking into this i find that the folder has been moved and now resides within another folder in said dept, My personal view to this is user mistakes IE a cut and a paste etc, management are a bit weiry on this and say that it isnt there dept etc.

Do or has anyone had this problem before folders just moving themselves or would you say this is 100% user mistakes, i think it is, i am going to put auditing on the server to see what happens and any other tips would be appreciated, anyone know of this?, Im running raid 5 and windows 2000 server, partitioned into c:\ and d:\ where d:\ is data drive where working dirs are.

thanks

I haven't seen that problem..It should be user mistakes. A+, MCP, CCNA

How many users does this happen to? I'm guessing user error. Glen A. Johnson

One way you can check to see what is happening with the folders is to turn on auditing for those resources. If you want to audit resources on a specific machine use the Local Security Policy console found in the Admin tools. After enabling auditing go to the folder you want to monitor, right click, select the security tab, then the advanced button. Once in the advance properites select the auditing tab and you can select what you want to monitor.

Hope this makes sense...I have never seen a folder migrate to another location except during a back up then went horribly awry!

Hi

I would say that it looks like (as many have said) user error. I find some users have trouble using the mouse effectively, and accidentally do a drag and drop of a dir into a sub dir - resulting in a move.

The best way to combat this is to let the users know that it can happen, and that if they find any files missing, is to contact you straight away - let them know that they will not get in trouble etc. They are there to do their job, you are there to help them get their job done.

You could audit them - but in my experience pointing the finger at staff only results in conflict. Only audit for your own re-assurance, and maybe send out a memo as above, or post something on your intranet (if available).

cheers,

Brett

What kinda NTFS permission do the workers have on these folders? If they have modify or Full controll do they have to have this. I would suggest that if you can get away with write permission that you lower there permission to this and see if the folders get moved then. If I'm not mistaken you have to modify to move a folder.

Also if they need modify on the Files go into the advanced properties of the root folder of the working directories and give the workers read/execute and write on folders and then give them modify on the files.

I would also audit like you and others mentioned.

Thanks, my views exactly but when you have a power hungrey manager who thinks his dept is the best you can see my fight :)

i will suggest Auditing and see what happens.

thanks again
