Facts:
Windows 98 2nd edition English
Microsoft Office applications, some in English and some in Swedish
The folder C:\Windows\Start menu\Programs\StartUp just contains one program (named Bigfix).
Every time I start my PC there is a folder opened on my Desktop. The name of the folder is C:\Program and it contains only one folder called Microsoft Office.
Even if I close the folder it appears again if I re-start the PC. Some one has told me that this is because I have mixed languages in my MS office application.
Even if that's the case isn't there anything that can be made to stop the folder to open every time I start the PC?

Tjena Lassas!

It is true that the problem exists because of mixed languages. The folder that contains the installed programs is called "program" in Sweden and "program files" in USA. To correct this problem you can start the Registry Editor (click Start, Run, type regedit and hit enter) and under the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" key you will find the programs that starts automatic with your system. If there is a value in the "run" key that has the path c:\program files\*.*, only the "c:\program" part of the value will be executed. This explains why your "program" folder opens when your system starts.

If the vaue that is causing the problems exists in your "c:\program files\" folder, then you have to type " marks (I cant remeber the English word) before and after the value.
Example: You have a value with the execution path "c:\program files\program\program.exe /switch" then your adjusted value should be ""c:\program files\program\program.exe" /switch".

If your installed program is not in your "program files" folder but in your "program" folder, then you can adjust the path so it is correct.

If you just want the "program" folder to stop open, then you can just delete the value that causes the problem.

I hope this will solve your problem.

Svenson sounds like he has it together.

There may be another reason for the folder opening when you start your computer.

Windows Explorer Starts When You Start Your Computer

------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows 98

------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS
After you start your computer normally or in safe mode, Windows Explorer may start and display the contents of the root folder or the Windows folder.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you are running Internet Explorer version 5.0 and the Windows Explorer DesktopProcess registry key is set.

RESOLUTION
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To resolve this issue, delete the DesktopProcess key from the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Tjena yourself Daniel,
thanks for your effort to try to help me. Unfortunately your tips didn't help or I have done something wrong.
I followed your recommendation and went to the
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run".
I found an entry that looked like your example and that was
"C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Dr Solomon's VirusScan\avconsol.exe /minimize" that I changed to
""C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Dr Solomon's VirusScan\avconsol.exe" /minimize", but that didn't make any difference.:-(
I've looked into the folder "C:\Program" that opens on my desktop. It contains another folder "Microsoft Office" which itself contains seven ".exe" files named:
Ccmailsp.exe
Dataacc.exe
Outcvt.exe
Outcvtnt.exe
Ppview97.exe
Timexnt.exe
Wd97cnv.exe
Does this help you to figure out why the folder is opened at start of the PC?

Tjena again Daniel,
I made a typing error in my previous response. The full path to the ".exe." files in the folder that opens is
"C:\Program\Microsoft Office\ValuPack"
I'm sorry!

Hello!

reghakrs solution may solve it but thist is a normal problem when mixing Swedish and English versions of Windows 9x and applications.

If you run "msconfig.exe" and look under "Autostart", you will find all the contents of the run key in the registry. Here you can try to disable one of the values and restart the machine, if the Program folder doesnt appear then your problem is solved, if it does then you have to enable it again and try with another one.
When you have find out which one it is that is causing the problem you can just leave it disabled or try to fix it in the registry

I have also encountered this problem recently, where "C:\Program" attempts to open at startup.
However, mine appears as an error message "unable to open C:\Program". I do not have any "Program" folder at root.
I followed Daniel Svensson instructions and edited the registry. This solved it.
In my case, I had recently uninstalled an application "AutoMachron" using the Win Add/Remove Programs utility, but the registry key was still there in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run".....referring to a path "C:\Program Files\AutoMachron\AutoMachron.exe" (which of course did not exist after uninstalling it). After deleting the key as Daniel suggested, this resolved the error message.

I am glad I could help you ardoink, thanks for letting me know!
I would appreciate if you marked my post as a helpful post.
