MY floppy drive wont read discs -

the light is always on - as if its active,

i get the 'drive a is not ready, rety or cancel' message when i try to load anything.

I have no conflicts in device manager - and it quotes 'this device is working properly' (thanks windows 98)

I have tried 2 drives (one panasonic, one alps) and 2 cables. Still no joy.

I need the drive to perform a format C using a startup disc and CD. Can i format without floppy ??? dare i do it ?? T3/\/\p()

You can format your c:\drive without a floppy by booting into DOS. Of course if DOS is not on your system then this option is no good. Also , this may sound kinda silly but are you sure the cables are not on backwards??..If the LED on the floppy is always on this is a sign that the cable is not installed proberly......Let me know how you make out??

What brand of computer do you have? I know on some Hewlett Packard PCs there was a software update to fix a problem like yours. I could be wrong so don't hold that against me. At least I'm trying! I hope I've helped in some way........

34 ribbon will install on the floppy with the red stripe on the #34 pin end as easily as it will install on the #1 pin end. Normally you look on the board for the #1 pin and put the red stripe to that end.
On the M/B end it is also possible to reverse them if the cable was built with non-polarized headers or the board didn't have a polarizing shell around the pins.
In any event, if the floppy select lite stays on continuously, the first thought is that the cable is reversed. Ed Fair

The floppy drive light stays on if the cable is the wrong way around!
Red stripe on cable to pin 1 on floppy drive,
it might be more difficult the other end! if your cable hasn't got a locator lug for the connector on the motherboard! generally though it's the same way as the IDE cables, so just look which way the cables are and if the red stripe is left or right and copy for the floppy. Martin
