A computer belonging to one of the girls in our office has this strange problem. About 10 to 20 times a day the floppy drive starts rattling away as if someone is tying to access it. I suspect it's some piece of software searching for something on the drive, but that's just a guess.

Is there some way to monitor the access requests of a floppy, to determine what making the request?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's not really a serious problem but it could eventually drive you crazy.

Does this PC have Office installed? If so, disable FindFast. It's an inane utility which creates and maintains an index of office file locations. If you've ever loaded an Office app from the floppy drive, FindFast will have added the A:\ drive to its index, and it will periodically poll it to see if there's any thing there.

Also check any settings in any anti-virus software.

Also, if you have the floppy shared every time someone browses the network your system will scan the drives to update the directory information. Unshare the floppy. Your mileage may vary...

Just thinking what a great t-shirt that phrase would make.

Sorry. [neutral]
