Hi,

for a long time, I have been creating custom toolbars (right click on task bar, toolbars -> new toolbar) and I was always able to detach those toolbars from the main task bar and dock them to the side or top. I accidently closed one of my toolbars and it seems like windows no longer gives you to possibility to drag a toolbar out of the task bar. The drag n drop icon still show when you point and click but it does nothing. I am not even able to simply detach the toolbar form the task bar. I am using XP sp2 with the latest updates. Is this nice feature really gone? Also, I experience the same problem in vista, so same question applies.

Thank you!

The feature is still there. It works for me, SP2, up to date. I can't reproduce the behaviour you describe. It's not as simple as you need to unlock the taskbar I suppose?

Sorry about the delay, I was not home and had no internet connection. No, it is not a matter of locked task bar. I have been using this feature for a few years and it is really not working anymore... Probably a windows bug... Sucks, I will not reinstall for that. I am also using xp pro sp2 w/ the latest updates.

Nice try but didn't work! Bump.

What do you mean exactly with your folders to group icons? Do you simply put folders containing shortcuts on your desktop or am I missing something?

Got it in one - that's exactly what I do. I have folders set to open in a new window & remember window settings & I size them so I don't see the options bit on the left hand side.

That's cool but what I liked with the floating toolbar is that I could dock it left and set to stay always on top so I did not have to actually see the desktop to open shortcuts.

Just enable the desktop toolbar!

I got it working another way! I took the folder with all my shortcuts in it and dragged it to the side of the screen and it worked! The toolbar reappeared and now I can move it as I wish like it used to be. Nice :) I was going crazy.
