Does anyone know how to get rid of the nagging flashing of the taskbar items when they've changed somehow? For instance... if I'm using one program and I get a message in some messenger program, the window will flash. I'd like to disable this flashing all together. Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Thanks!

That is all about Windows taking focus away from your current window. I'm talking about stopping the flashing of icons in the Taskbar. I have my taskbar set on auto-hide. I don't want the blue flashing to happen anymore. I don't want ANYTHING to FLASH in my taskbar. I want to disable all notification.

Download and run "X-setup". Appearence > taskbar. Be cautious with this program, you can do a lot of things - including totally screwing up your system if you are not careful!

Are you referring then to the icons which appear in the Notification Area next to the clock? Icons which flash in there are usually caused by programming design and maybe the only control you can exercise over that is that which is offered to you in the program's preferences or properties.

What programs are causing this problem?

TweakUI for XP has the option to disable all icons in the notification area.

Freeware, from Microsoft Downloads.

I am a little concerned about your flashing:

. If you want to disable taskbar flashing for a task that does not have focus, you can control the number of flashes but you cannot remove the flash completely;

. There is a fairly wide-spread malware at the moment that will lead to every Explorer.exe refresh flashing all icons, including Notification tray icons.

See faq608-4650
I am not aware of a specific removal tool or steps for the issue.

. Finally, use Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks. If a Scheduled Task is imminent, you can have flashing.
