I'm wondering if anyone out there has experienced this yet.
This is on a Windows 98 SE PC.

This firstlook.com website is apparently another online ad company. But this one is different. Along with installing software on the hard drive, it also places values in the registry that reappear after being deleted. It's obviously storing something somewhere. I've deleted the 2 registry keys that it created, but after rebooting the PC one of the two keys is always replaced. I cannot find what's allowing or causing this to happen. I've also deleted all Internet Temp files and cookies.

Here are the two Registry Keys it created:

1. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\FirstLook

2. HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\FirstLook

I've looked in the Run registry keys, Startup folder, entire hard drive, entire registry, and I cannot find any instances of "firstlook." I've also backed up the registry manually after having deleted all instances of "firstlook." But as soon as I reboot, the first registry key is back again. So far I've found nothing helpful on the Net so I'm starting this post for it here. Game on.

Have you looked on thier website for removal info? If not see if they have it.

Search your computer for winstart.bat. Do you find one?

Download Startlog.com from here and run it. It'll create 2 text files on your desktop. Copy and paste the results of just Startlog (not the stubpaths file) to your reply here. It may show us something.

Ad-aware did not remove Firstlook - I probably just need to update. However, I was able to uninstall FirstLook from Add/Remove programs.

This firstlook crap pops up on my computer everyday, without even having a browser open. This is virus-like activity and should be illegal. Is anyone aware of any laws against this? I'd love to prosecute these jerks.

THAT STUPID FIRSTLOOK THING IS IN ADD\REMOVE. DELETE IT!!

I DONT KNOW IF THAT SOLVES THE OPENS EVERY DAY THING.

Good luck..

Ad-aware will detect it and remove it, usually. Also look for something called "New Dot Net" or "NewDotNet" in Add/Remove programs and your registry. Delete all instances of it.

While the FirstLook thing is the visible symptom of the problem, the actual problem is this NewDotNet thing.

Then go to for great information on stuff like this.

One comment/opinion on what you said:
Laws are for law-abiding people. The pieces of $%^! who do this kind of stuff would likely never be effected by any laws, primarily because it will be long after we're all dead before this country has their first clue as how to handle situations like this concerning technology as it relates to moralistic, fair, or lawful behavior. As you probably know, most people still think computes are "magic" but they're fun to play games on!
