Firewall to Router

Alright I have a Cisco 2621 Router and a Cisco PIX 515 Firewalll and am having trouble physically connecting the two. Both ports are ready to go, but I cant seem to be able to connect them. I believe that you need a cross-over cable, but that doesn't seem to work. I even took a cross-over cable I knew worked and still nothin. Is it not a cross-over I need?

Cisco recomends plugging the firewall into a switch, so im not sure if you need a crossover cable or not (i would personaly think so). double check that the ports are enabled and set to auto. i ran into a problem like this and ended up just plugging the FE ports on my router and the FE ports on my PIX515 into a switch. in the end my problem turned out to be an ip problem but i left the connecitons through a switch. Since i have multiple FE ports on my router, if i loose one, i can easily reconfigure the router and restore connectivity to the firewall remotely if i have to.

I really don't want to plug the firewall directly on the outside, but I can figure out why I cant get them connected. I have tried connecting both ports (the one on the router and the one on the firewall) to a switch and I get connectivity, so I know the ports are set.
Let me also place how I made the Cross-over cable, I think it is correct:
side 1
WO-O-WB-G-WG-B-WBR-BR
side 2
WG-G-WO-B-WB-O-WBR-BR

check the interface stats and see if there are errors, the speed settings or something may need to be forced when connecting the pix to the router directly
