I am doing some research for implementing a firewall for a client. They have a web server, exchange 2000 server and about 30 clients on the lan. They also have about 40 external users who will need access also. They want their external users to be able to have vpn access to the internal network and they also want to create a DMZ for the web and mail server. Can anyone recommend a cost effective solution for this type of setup?

I'm fond of the Watchguard Firebox. It does all the things you've noted, and under $3000.

I would not reccommend going with a solution that would use a low end PC as your firewall. From a hardware perspective, you want something that is reliable on all levels and not going to burn out a power supply, or fry a component because its old.

While smoothwall may have a good product, I would prefer going with a more well known solution (such as watchguard)
