Hey all,

Need to buy a firewall to protect a business network of between 8-18 PCs.

Any reccomedations? Cant afford anything expensive - but is more important to be good, then cheap.

Sorry forgot one thing, pay attention to alphashield , one allows port controlling while the other does not. Double check that on hotbrick also. Reason im reccomending them is there a more affordable firewall and much more reliable then software ones. Anyways hope this helps

What OS is the machine that will act as firewall?
If you're going for FreeBSD, ipfw is built-in and very good (and free...).
Linux : iptables

Save yourself a hassle, spend the money and get a cisco pix... I always recommend the 506E as it is unlimited in licensing for computers accessing the internet and unlimited with vpn's. I pay around $1200 for them but well worth the money.

Many other "stateful firewalls" (sonicwall, cyberguard etc) will hit you with licensing fees per user and per vpn. Whatever you buy, be sure to cover the bases with the licensing.

What about going cheap with a pc and Smoothwall, or IPcop, or monowall. This should do everything you want at a fraction of the cost.
