Does automatic updates always download updates from windows update server? I know that we have SUS (software update server) running on our domain, how can I find out what server a particular PC is updating from? everything I've found on the web (including M$ site) says go to HKLM\software\policies\microsoft\windows\AU\, but I don't have that key, so does that mean it's using windows update site?

Run..
gpedit.msc

computer config
admin template
windows components
windows update

Specify Intranet Microsoft Service Location

you should be able to check that on the client workstation.. you may not be able to mess with it though

if its set to "not configured" that means you are going direct to M$

I hope that helps...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\

sorry to have to dissappoint you both, but the windows key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\ doesn't exist in my registry, and there's no policy called windows update in windows components. So does this mean it's going to M$ site?

how did you guess !!!!!!!! [lol]

Yes, it's XP Pro

if the key is missing..

..then its safe to say its going to M$.. because those keys are the only way you can redirect'em

>> You may not have pushed the ADM template changes of Group Policy to the clients

Auger282's suggestion was regaring local policy, not group policy though - correct?

It is a policy added with the SUS/Windows update .adm add-in.
