Finding oracle home and base programatically

Gents,

I believe this one may have already been answered. I have tried to search the forums, but without success.

How can I programatically find oracle_home and oracle_base in a windows environment. I believe that there is a way of doing this in sql plus too, which Santa has already posted.

Can someone either let me know, or point me at the correct thread.
