Bear with me, I know very little..

If I go to Network Neighboorhood, and then scroll down to a specific ComputerName (eg. "ABC1245"), then the Username (eg. "bobhope") of the person logged onto that machine is usually listed.

But,at my current company, the username is not listed! So, how do I associated a given ComputerName with a UserName. Is there a DOS command perhaps? We use NT btw.

Why do I ask? Well, I have been at this company for only a fortnight and someone is already sending me rude NET SEND messages... ... and I want to find out who it is before making an issue of it!

Many thanks for any help,
Klopper

The 'username' isn't. Its just a 'free text' entry you can set up on PC - some sites users put their name here.

If you get pstools (command line apps - freeware) from one of them (psloggedon) should give a list of machines\users logged on to the domain.

Two steps

1) First find ipaddress of pc from where u are getting nte send messages

2)use command "nbtstat -A <ip-address>"
This will show you the username who logged into the domain from that pc.

hi please write the second step by giving an example? I've tried the command but it had given the error ;

The name specified is not recognized as an
internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

thanks
tulunay.

If you run Windows NT Diagnostics, you can see the "Currently Logged in Users" on the remote machine.

Ala, Start -> Programs -> Admin Tools -> WinNT Diagnostics, then File -> Select Computer, choose the PC, and on the "Network" tab it will list your username, and the user that's logged on locally to the machine. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

if you try the following you will get the username
note the pc number of the sender of the message
1 tracert pcnumber (This will give you the IP Address)
2 nbtstat -A IP Address will give you the logged on username

Perfect gconlon, have a star!

Now I hold the cards!
