find text between <> tags

I'm having a hard time searching for this answer. I have a SQL text field from which I need a query to extract the text between <> tags, i.e. <some text here> excluding everyting else in the field. There could be as much as a paragraph in the field. I'm absolutely blank on how to handle this. any help would be appreciated. thank!
