Is there a way to filter junk email at the server level
with Exchange 5.5? I know we can go into OUtlook
individually but what about at the Exchange Server? Any
help would be appreciated. thanks.[ponytails2]

There is no way on the server. What you can do is server based rules in Outlook.

Can't really say "filter" out emails but you can block them out in Exchange Server.

Go into the Exchange Admin, find your IMS (Internet Mail Service), Connections Tab, and Message Filtering. Once in message filtering you can just add the domains that are sending you SPAM or the individual email addresses.

So basically to block all emails from a domain put @domain.com or to block individual emails put spam@spam.com

You will have to stop and restart the IMS once you are done.

I would say go with a third party software to filter SPAM out. One thing about all this is the so called "return address" usually changes frequently. So adding addresses and domains to a list might be a time investiment and not completely edit out all those emails that show up. Like the ones from

greatdeals.com
greatdeals.com.
great.deals.com
great-deals.com
etc.

They change these every so often so that simple exchange filters are not as effective. Since it requires an IMS stop and re-start this might become a pain on-going.
