My customer upgraded the motherboard and cpu on his PC to a P4 3.0Ghz, when he tried to boot up the Maxtor 2 B020H1 hard drive running WinXP Home Edition it wouldn't boot up.
He bought a new 120GB hard drive and loaded WinXP onto it and it boots up fine. He then slaved the old Maxtor hard drive. The hard drive is picked up fine by Windows but does not show all the files on it, instead it shows 16 files with square boxes for the filename. 5 files show 0KB, 7 files show 1KB, 1 file shows 1,280 KB and 3 files show 81,920KB. One folder is also showing with a square for it's name. None of the files can be accessed. Here is a screenshot of the problem:

He needs the files from this hard drive so needs to boot into it hopefully.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Link to image just takes me to a hotmail screen!

Sorry didn't know how to attach an image so pointed to it in my hotmail inbox which didn't work.

Anyway I have given up and formatted the drive. I ran a Maxtor utility on it and it said it was failing, so recovery was probably not possible.

I did this before I could run chkdsk.
