Files Missing on 2000 Advanced Server

Got another good one for the Tek-Tips gurus. Monday, 2000 Advanced Server (SP4), DC with AD, also running SQL Server 2000 was infected by SQL slammer. After making repairs, and a frantic round of patching, got system up and stable on Wednesday. Saturday, system shuts down on its own. When rebooted, reports that NTLDR is not found. I remember reading an article somewhere that said that if I replaced the boot files, I should be able to get the machine up and running again. After doing so (from a 2000 Server, not Advanced), I am getting a report that my ntoskrnl file is corrupt or missing. Unfortunately, my 2000 Advanced Server disk is damaged, and I can neither boot it, nor manually extract the necessary files to do a file replacement. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for that, would be helpful if I had the ERD. Unfortunately, previous computer guy didn't feel it was necessary to update, or even create those. Any other ideas?

This talks about NT, but it looks worth looking at. Once repaired, make monthly ERD's or a new one whenever you make a change to the system. Good luck.

Will the Win2000 Advanced Server boot disks alone give me the capability to replace the ntoskrnl file? Or do I need to track down a working Advanced Server disk?

Also, just thought of something. The machine that I restored the boot files from is not configured anything like the Advanced Server machine. I would need to manually edit the boot.ini file to point to the proper disk, partition, etc. to have it find the current ntoskrnl, correct?

Can you get another copy of advanced? Think you're gonna need it in the long run to get back to your original configuration. If you can, maybe you can copy the file to a floppy, then load the file from dos.

Partition is NTFS, so no-can-do on the file loading from floppy. Unfortunately, also striking out on the Advanced Server. Things are not looking good right now.

How about using a disk from 2000 Server (not advanced) to activate the recovery console. Would that be able to restore my boot files to their proper configuration?

Don't know. Give it a shot and see what happens. (My first guess is no, but again, it can't hurt since you can't boot now at all.) I think you're gonna have to find an advanced server cd. Have you contacted MS? I've had to bite the bullet a couple of times and call there tech support. (To be honest though, the tech support at tek-tips is better than they are.)

Glen, are you running a 2k advanced server that you have access to? If so, could you check the boot.ini and tell me if it specifies advanced for the operating system?

Running plain W2K server only. Sorry. Maybe somebody else is could help us out. This looks like someone else with the same problem, or similar. Might help.

Wonder of wonders, I got the server up and operational yesterday. Managed to get my hands on another copy of Advanced Server 2000. However, server pulled a repeat performance this morning. Anyone have any clue what might be causing this? I really don't like being dragged out of bed to come work on this server AGAIN. I'd rather fix the actual problem than keep dealing with the symptoms. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.
