OK, this may be a Novell problem, or it may be an Autocad problem. I may also be on a wild goose chase, but I'm giving the user the benefit of the doubt on this.

A user opens an Autocad file in the morning, works on it all day, and saves periodically (in some cases very often). At some point the program crashes (drawing errors usually). Then, he goes into the directory and the file is as it was before he opened it. Earlier date, same file etc. I cannot get it to duplicate in my presence. I know it is the same file they are working on because sometimes I can find the sv$ file in the temp directory and it has the correct name.

Now, I have several users complaining about this, so Im wondering if anyone else has seen this either with Autocad or other programs. So far for us it is just Autocad.

The workstations are Architectural Desktop 3.3, Windows XP or 2000, Novell Client v.4.90 sp1a, netware 5.1. Please refrain from comments indicating that we are being lied to, we've explored that quite extensibly. It is still a possibility of course, but Im hoping that someone else has seen this.

Thanks

You might try checking this at the server console:

SET CLIENT FILE CACHING ENABLED

Find out what it's currently set to. (Probably 'ON' by default) If it's 'ON', turn it off. Turning this setting generally helps with database apps, not sure if it will help with Autocad. As a rule, I always turn this off because it causes more problems than I prefer to deal with.

Also, you could try having the problem user run it from a local drive and see if the same behavior occurs. That would help pin it down either way.

Another thing, you may want to update the client to 4.90 SP2.. SP2 fixed a lot of problems.

We, too, have this set to OFF. We also have to set File Caching at the workstation to OFF and your post reminded me of this. I was hoping that I had forgotten to set this, but, alas, it was OFF.

Actually, we DO have 4.90sp2, I was mistaken. BUT 4.91 is available, so we have installed this. Meanwhile, I still have the feeling this is a case of blame it on the computer. Or, more accurately, the IT guys.

We think it may be the 'isavepercent' variable, a feature of Autocad that allows partial saves in order to save time. It defaults to zero in the install of Architectural Desktop 3.3. For some reason this was set to 100 on this particular computer. A few tech articles at Autodesk suggest that this should be set to zero if you are experiencing trouble saving to network drives.
