My C: drive spontaneously corrupted a few minutes ago and it looks like I'll have to format. I have important files that I need to transfer, though. Is there a way to transfer files from one drive to another from the recovery console or someting similiar, or is there a free program I can get that will run from a floppy or something? I need some way of getting stuff off and I can't get into Windows.

If you had another PC you could hook up the corrupted HD as a slave...watch for virused though...id make sure the other PC was up to date and then scan the corrupt HD for viruses 1st thing before grabbing the data...if the data you want is toast then you might be able to find a DOS recovery program via goog le search...i found lots when i just checked...

good luck!

thanks,

Dave

I thought about that, but to make the hdd fit where I wanted it to, I had to literally jam it in there. It WON'T come out. I've tried before when I needed to get it out last time. And it's not a virus, I know that for a fact. Everything started messing up after I had to turn the power off from the supply in the back.

hmmm that makes it more diffucult...are you able to get the machine to boot?

ok you could do a chkdsk, but that may make things worse if your data is on one of the corrupt sectors...

anyone know if a chkdsk will screw things up too much to get the data back?

i would try to get that drive outta there, its your best option.

thanks,

Dave

I guess that's what I can do. I have two other computers sitting right beside it so transfer that way isn't a problem.

sorry i couldnt come up with a better option for you...
once you get that data off the bad drive id either get a new drive or make sure you run that chkdsk...chkdsk will find the bad sectors and put police tape around them so that windows will not write to them...but if your drive is starting to go id make sure you have recent backups as that drive may die completely....

thanks,

Dave

The drive itself is fine. But it does seem that there are bad sectors now. A power surge hit it last week and then today the comp randomly froze and when I shut down it just didn't work right when I got it back up. Thanks for your help.
