I have a file that I want to transfer from one machine to another. The two machines are not on the same domain, but they are on the same network. Do I need to use ftp, and if so how do I configure it?

use netbois or ip address.
//xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/c$
if prompt for username or password then keyin the local account on the target machine

I know no voice, I knew nothing about systems,
i know NUTS on networking, Therefore I dont know anything!

Could you not use it's a free service and no size limit on files. After you upload it, you will see a download url, get on the other computer and paste the url into your browser. I hope this helps.

the website seem to be quite good however the 2 system is within the same network segment, isnt is better to transfer via local LAN using TCP/IP or NetBios then thro internet?

Better? At least it should be easier and, perhaps, quicker. I would connect via netbios name and transfer that way like a previous post. You could go super complicated using a component from softartisans.com but that would be ridiculous.
