Hi,

I would like to transfer files in my daughter laptop to her desktop. DVD disc is not possible because her laptop has no DVD burner. I have a switch which can connect these 2 machines together. However, I could not get XP Pro to do the file transfer using the share folder/file method as in Windows 98 or 2k.

Any suggestion is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ching-Ho Cheng

Do both machines have a network port (RJ-45) available? Even if you don't have a network available you can get a crossover ethernet cable, plug the two together, and transfer that way.

Are both machines running XP?

Have you configured any firewall to allow access between the machines?

Does the laptop have a USB connection enabling you to transfer files via a USB thumb drive etc?

If the files are not too big you can zip them and E-mail them.

Thanks for all the responses. Both machines are connected to a switch. Before using XP Pro, these machines were running Win98 SE. I had no problem to sharing and transfering files back and forth. However, after I upgraded these machines to XP Pro, XP doesn't allow file transfer via folder sharing. It keeps asking login name and password. I had tried the winodws login name and password of the other machine which I tried to access but no luck.

That's why I posted this question to try to find a way to do it. I had tried to run ftpserver in one machine and ran ftp from other machine to do the file transfer. This method worked but slow.

I prefer the direct file transfer between these machines thru a hub or switch.

Thanks,

On both machines:

Start button, Run, net user Guest /Active:yes

Check firewalls on both. You want File and Printer Sharing to be allowed to pass through the firewall.

Last, check Netbios setting on both. You want to select the middle button on the WINS tab in TCP/IP, Properties, Advanced.

See:
Last, If the password prompting is for the IPC$ share, see:

Thanks for both responses. I will give it a try :)
