file sharing problem

i have a laptop and a desk top connected via cross-over cable in a home lan. file and printer sharing are enabled on both of them on drive level, and folder level. on the laptop, i click a folder, and enable file sharing. when i try to click that folder in the desktop, it says access denied.
what could cause this?

Many things can cause this, it's a pretty common issue.

I assume you have confirmed that it is indeed a crossover cable you are using? (yes possibly a silly question but best to start with the basics )

Can you give some more specific details on the configuration of your computers? Ie. Firewall settings and such like?

Can you see the workgroup computers within My Network Places? I assume both machines are already in the same work group?

Instead of trying to browse through My Network Places, what happens when you type the laptop name in desktop via my computer? Ie. go to My Computer, then in the address bar type the laptop name in the format \\LAPTOPNAME ?

there are no problems in the network. you can browse each one's ok. they share internet connection. packets flow ok. the laptop's c: drive is mapped on the desktop as z:
i click z:, it shows all the folders. when i click on "some" folders, it shows the content. and when it does, it misses one file. a jpg doesn't show up. i go to the laptop, and check the file sharing, and it says sharing enabled. some folders, when i click, it says access denied. when look at the laptop properties, sharing enabled.
