How can I configure file replication between 2 NT 4 servers. I would like to replicate a folder containing all the user documents. Do I have to put it under the REPL$ folder or can I just specify any folder from within the server manager? At the moment, we dont have a tape device and I figured this would be a way to safeguard against data loss.

Also, where would I configure the paramaters so that I can schedule the replication.

Thanks,

Julian

I would use the task scheduler command to execute a batch file to copy the files and folders. You will only have the task scheduler if you have IE 5 or later i believe installed on the machine. Or you can use the old AT commands from the command line

Batch file would look somethink like this

xcopy c:\mydata\*.* \\destination server\folder\*.* /e /d /y

Then you can use the scheduler to run Thanks

There are several very inexpensive backup programs. A very nice one is PCBackup. Sorry don't have the URL here at home. It does great things and is cheap I think around $35 or so.

Try using msbackup. Backup the files you would like to a mapped network drive on another machine.

Take a look at Microsoft articles Q138125 and Q147824 on Technet. Also you do not have to use default REPL$ share, just point the path to where you need it to point.
I am replicating a tree of directories from server to about 15 workstations - works great, never a problem.

Good luck.

Forgot to mention, that articles DO apply also to NT4, which is what I am using.

Thanks,

Boka, do I need to copy my entire user dir to the export dir under the REPL$ folder? Can I not change it so that the D:\user dir is the default for replication exporting. I will be replicating between 2 NT 4 servers. Basically I would like to replicate Server A's d:\users\ with Server B's d:\users\ every night so that any new changes from Server A will be added to the dir on Server B.

Thanx,

Julian

You should be able to change your directory to whatever you need.
However, you did not mention before that you need replication to occur during nighttime. You cannot schedule the type of replication I was referring to.
For replication at certain times only use either scopy or robocopy programs from resource kit and at command scheduler.
Take a look here:

Good luck.
