Does anyone know how I can set up a "FILE" port? I'm running Windows 2000 Pro and there is no "FILE" choice. I need to print to file.

Thanks.

Add printer, local printer, and select File as the port.

There is no FILE to select, that's my problem

Hi, Maig,

See this thread about to create the port FILE:

Hi John,

Thanks, but I tried the solution in the thread you suggested and it still won't work for me. When I set up a "Local Port" it asks for a printer driver. I tried choosing "generic" and then I tried using an HP5000PS printer driver but none of them worked for Print to File.

Anyone else have any ideas how I can set up a FILE - print to file port in Windows 2000 Pro???

Add Printer
Local Printer
Add port
Uncheck 'automaticly detect my local port using Plug and Play drivers'

File is one of the local port assignments.

If not:

. either you are not the local Administrator for the print server computer you are trying to modify; you essentially have "Power User" priviliges, which restricts you to only Plug and Play rights to assignemnts;

. or, the printer driver should be redone. There is an issue with the printer driver.

Note: this is a NEW printer assignment, leave the existing assignment alone.

I found out what was wrong from a post in a different thread. Thanks!

The solution was to add a new local port and name it

FILE:

I kept leaving out the colon so the port wasn't setting up as a print to file port.

Ok, glad you got it resolved.
Port assignments are very particular, as you are calling native pre-allocated port resources.

I wrote the other thread.
BigJohnD emphasized the point about the use of FILE: earlier.

Thanks for your feedback. I have learned to be much clearer about the use of my original suggestion:

. add a second, local printer definition.
. add a new Port definition for File, and make sure all use the FILE: format for the port.

Hi, bcastner

Yes, I should have stressed the necessity of the final colon on the port name FILE:, and acknowledged you wrote the message at: thread779-641109
