File not found during copy and paste

I have a user with win 2000 and Office 2000 who gets the file not found dialogue box when he copies a range of cells, some containing references to another file, and pastes them in the same sheet thus creating a copy. Even though the message says file not found all the formulas work correctly even the ones referencing the file that supposedly could not be found.
Any ideas on what could cause this?

The error message could be referring to a shortcut or link file that references a file at another location. Weird things happen when accessing a shortcut or link file. Click on a valid link and the target file opens up. But when referencing a bad link file, such as during a copy, you will get error messages.
