mfc42.dll is used by ActiveX controls. Some software that accompanies imaging devices, like the Kodak camera, replaces this file with a version that is not compatible with many other imaging and /or graphics applications. I assume you are using Win98.
Fix as follows:
Find all occurences of the file mfc42.dll and rename it mfc42.old
Goto Add / Remove programs and remove Microsoft Plus! 98.
Reboot.
Goto Add / remove programs and install Microsoft Plus! 98, which will install the correct version.
