File level NTFS permissions "disappearing"?!?

I have a subfolder named Finance inside a shared folder named SharedData.

The Finance folder is not inheriting its permissions from the SharedData folder.

The permissions on the Finance folder are:

Domain Admins: Full Control
System: Full Control
FinanceUsers: Modify

Inside the Finance folder are multiple Word and Excel documnets all of which inherit the permissions from the Finance folder.

I need one specific user to have only read access to one specific file in the Finance folder. That user is not in the Finance Global Group

So, I go into the security permissions of the folder, and Add the username to it and have Read as the only option checked.

I end up with the followig NTFS permissions on the file:

Domain Admins: Full Control
System: Full Control
FinanceUsers: Modify
Dave: Read

Everything works fine for a day or two. After then, the users permissions are gone and the file permissions have reverted back to its original state of:

Domain Admins: Full Control
System: Full Control
FinanceUsers: Modify

I know for a fact the my other co-workers who have Domain Admin rights are not changing the permissions.

Any reason why the file level NTFS permissions aren't staying?!?

Maybe try to remove all existing permission, then set the folder to iheret permission from the parent folder. After that turn off ihert permissions from parent folder and set the correct permissions.

Also try to add a different user to the list to make sure it is not just that user.

You can try to add another folder under the same sub directory as the finace folder to see if you get the same problem. If not you can just move everything over to it and recreate the share.

Look under the properties of the share in computer management and set the permission in there.. instead on directy on the folder.. you might find that they are different.. compare and correct as you need, I have seen this once before in windows 2003.. just a suggestion.

The NTFS permissions on the shared folders are staying...It's the user NTFS permissions on the file itself that is reverting back it it's original state after I make a change

are you using any type of software to copy data to this location, as they can copy permissions as well.

No, but we are using Veritas 9.1 to do backups but that should have nothing to do with it

OK...I found out the problem.

When a user opens the file and makes a change then saves the file, the permissions reset to their original state..thus eliminating "Dave" from the NTFS permissions..

Why in the world would that be happening?
