AVG is telling me that I have a virus in a file in my 'Downloaded Program files folder' in C:\Windows, but when I look at that folder it appears to be empty, even with Show Hidden System files and folders selected. If however I right click and choose properties it tells me that there are 4 files in that folder. What gives? and how do I see them?

Cheers

Also uncheck" Hide protected operating system files". Just make sure to check it again when done.

This folder should contain any ActiveX Controls, these are not hidden or system files and are always visible. You should have a least one from Windows Update, plus perhaps some from Adobe or Google or other known programs you run that use ActiveX.

Do you have any Desktop.ini file in that folder? That might be hidden and causing problems. You may have a corrupted Desktop.ini file that could cause this type of behavior.

I suggest you let AVG do its job and see what happens.

Read the article, it gets interesting around the paragraph

"HOW MICROSOFT DOES IT"

Cheers Folks, hadn't seen the 'Operating system files' option, and the article is a good read. I tried letting AVG do it's stuff, but it couldn't touch it for some reason, even though I ran it as admin on the PC. Pretty sure that one of these will solve my problem though.

Disable System Restore and then;
Can you not boot to Safe Mode and Start > Run Cmd
CD "%Windir%\Downloaded Program Files" (will long file names in quotes work?)
attrib -h -s -r -a Desktop.ini
del desktop.ini

or alternately (to delete entire contemts);
attrib -h -s -r -a *.*
del *.*
to delete all

linney;
I had that article awhile back...lost it....found it at orig site, and now it looks even slightly updated with links (or someone else is hosting or whatever).....cool!
