File error: data may have been lost

Hi,
I just installed the Service pack 3 on the couple computers here and the finance tester is reporting an error.
When he opens an excel file it gives him the error: "File error: data may have been lost"

Most of the data was imported from Microsoft Dynamics, and it also has macros.

Not all files with Macros give this error, so I know it's not related to the macros. With the Service pack 2 it was opening perfectly also.

I read that this error already came up before sp2, but you had to click it 20-25times to make it go away, now it's only once.

I tried "save as" the file as a Excel 97-Excel2003 & 5.0/95, and then the data was changed... instead of 100 000 you get 1 000 000.
I changed the security level on the macro.
I checked the Regional Settings to make sure they were not changed by the SP3.
I tried Open and repair but it didn't fix anything.

It's doing it on every computer with Office 2003 SP3.

I uninstalled Excel and reinstalled with my office 2003 sp2 CD and it works, so it's really the Service Pack 3 that screw the files up.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this problem?
Thanks

Hi,

I came across this same situation, but in my case Excel was getting data from a program called MicroStrategies. The cause of the "File error: data may have been lost" error was that the destination cells for the data MicroStrategies was placing into Excel already had values in them. Once I cleared out those cells, MicroStrategies was able to cleanly import the data and I no longer got the error. Hope this helps.

Hi,

It doesn't really apply to my situation, because we're trying to put the data into a new excel file.

So far we're having this of problem with more then 1 program who exports data to excel.

From 1 application, the data we get in excel is the time, in seconds, which has past since the year 1900something.

From an other one it tells us that the date format is not what is expected, and then the program gives us 1 error for each cell they try to import (so I end up killing the process in the task manager)

Any idea is welcome,
Thanks,

I have only been able to find 1 way to "fix" the problem with the date.
I change the regional settings to English US and then it works.

I called the technical support for 1 of the program and they said that the problem has been reported and it can come from 1 windows update and some others from office update... They plan to fix the issue in the next release of RH Expert.
